This John Alden 54 Malabar 13 was classed as the last of the Malabars. The Malabar name was used for all of John Aldens personal Yachts.
Originally designed in 1943 this was one of only 2 ketch rigged vessels that he raced.
Desiderata was built from the lines in the USA in 1975 and extensivly refitted in 1997 where the rigs and deck were renewed along with much of the interior. She is constructed of solid GRP and has 38mm marine ply and epoxy decks.
She is as far as we know the only Malabar afloat.
This vessel was John Aldens last personally owned
racing yacht. The current owner has a design number from Alden as proof to being genuine.
Desiderata was sailed single handed by her builder
around the world and ended up in New Zealand.
She was then purchased by an Australian who cruised her in the Pacific again single
handed for much of the journey.
The current owner bought her last November to forfill a contract he had for the next 3 years. That contract has now fallen through so she just is not needed as much as he would love to keep her.
She is in superb condition and is a true sailors boat.
