Born and raised in Brisbane; I have spent much of my life enjoying the Gold Coast and Moreton Bay waterways doing all manner of things from water skiing to scuba diving and oyster farming to game fishing. Salt water and boating is my number one passion. My story probably starts with my father who originally started off in adult life as a telegram delivery boy and later together with my mother they worked very hard eventually owning a franchised motor dealership where dad spent much of his short life as the Dealer Principal. Unfortunately he passed away at the age of 47 and I as the eldest son became a second generation motor dealer almost by default. Whilst the motor industry was very good to me and my family and our business was reasonably big by local standards with several new car franchises and 120 odd staff it really wasn't my passion and I took the opportunity to sell the family business when the conditions were right in 2004 and take a break.
Having owned, built or borrowed too many boats to count over the years I have been fortunate enough to have been able to do several coastal passages in one of my own boats or as crew on other peoples boats over the years both North to the Whitsundays and South to Sydney as well as sailing from Brisbane to Osaka Japan on one occasion. I guess that salt water was in the blood to some extent as my wife of 30 years was the daughter of a well known local boating identity and we still enjoy every minute of our time just mucking about on boats with our four children now aged from 28 down to 20 or just the two of us going down the Bay together.
I can’t say if I was just getting a bit bored or maybe I was entitled to my own mid-life crisis when I decided that I might have a go at boat sales to give me something to do. By a twist of fate I was able to take up an offer as the local Queensland distributor for a US boat manufacturer and I have been absolutely addicted ever since. Looking to develop the business further I recognised that the GFC had created a new world market with the internet as its stage for boats. Australian buyers have been very quick to realise that there is a much broader range of vessels available to them sourcing out of the US with a better value proposition than they have ever had previously just searching local supply and I could see this phenomenon becoming much bigger particularly with the added advantage of a favourable currency exchange situation. With this in mind I researched where the business was being sourced from in the US and who was doing it best and made the trip to the USA to meet up with several brokers there. One of the businesses right at the top of my list was POP Yachts International.
