Merritt Island is a peaceful community of 36,000 located on the so-called "Space Coast" of Florida's east coast. Merritt Island is an ideal place to enjoy the boating lifestyle, because it seems like there is water everywhere. Nature gets top billing in Merritt Island. Its centerpiece is the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, 22 square miles of wetlands and home to more than 300 species of birds. Thanks to the Intracoastal and nearby bays, Atlantic beaches are nearby, as is historic Cocoa Village. This diverse city is warm in the winter. People who live in Merritt Island find it is possible to live near the water or a national wildlife refuge. Aerial photo of Merritt Island courtesy of and per license of Wikipedia and Sallicio.
