Pawcatuck is a village in the town of Stonington which is located in New London County, Connecticut. It is located across the Pawcatuck River from Downtown Westerly in Rhode Island. It includes the Mechanic Street Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The coastal access area on the Pawcatuck River provides unique shore-based fishing and car-top boating launching opportunities at the site of a former boat basin. Anglers can fish the former boat basin for Tomcod or fish the deeper waters along the River's shoreline for striped bass. Large boulders adjacent to the shore provide casting platforms for anglers. BE CAREFUL when accessing the rocks, when wet they are extremely slippery. The former boat basin also provides an excellent site for launching small car-top craft--paddle upstream to Pawcatuck River Park just downstream of the Route 1 Bridge or down-stream to the Barn Island Wildlife Management Area. Site visitors may also walk the main trail extending from the parking area to the River. An alternative trail leads from the parking area to the River but is less well defined. Both walkways provide birding opportunities and general passive enjoyment of the River and tidal marshes.
