Hand-built Hovercraft sculpted to look exactly like a Delorean. Though started in 2008, it wasn't put into service until 2012.
Custom flatbed tilting trailer built specifically for this hovercraft.
The two engines:
1) Thrust engine: is a 23HP Vanguard Briggs and Stratton model# 386447 - 3048 - G1. It's a 627cc, built in 2012 and has roughly 50 hours.
2) The Lift engine is a 875 Gross Torque Professional Series Briggs and Stratton model # 121S12 - 2008 - F1 190cc, built in 2015, It has approx. 14 hours.
There are miscellaneous spare parts and supplies including spare engine parts, fans and propellers, nuts and bolts.
The body is made out of styrofoam insulation that is glued together & carved into the shape of a Delorean, then fiberglassed, and painted with metallic paint. Therefore, this is a sculpture of a Delorean!
This craft hovers above the surface. The fan in the front pushes air down. Some of that air is diverted into the flexible vinyl "skirt". The skirt is like an inner tube around the perimeter of the hull which traps the rest of the air that is directed down under the hull. This pocket of high-pressure air lifts the craft about 6-8 inches off the ground/water.
Some air is escaping under the skirt at all points at all times, so in theory, even the skirt isn't touching the ground/water (in reality the skirt drags on the surface in many conditions). A second fan pushes air behind the craft, driving it forward and rudders behind this thrust fan turn the craft.
Mildly used on the San Francisco Bay.
The owner has spent the last few months of fall/winter 2018 remodeling and upgrading many of the systems on the craft, including:
- New stronger skirt (is translucent, not totally transparent like the last version)
- Replaced thrust engine components (potted new alternator in epoxy resin for corrosion protection, new magnetos, voltage regulator, head gasket, wiring, pull starter, carburetor)
- New fuel line, fuel pump, water separator fuel filter
- Patched and strengthened deck where water leaked into hull
- New LED lights in the tires, under the hull, and in cockpit
- All new wiring with waterproof switches and connectors
- Repaired thrust engine cover
- New more convenient lift engine cover
- New lift engine
- New lift engine air intake system
- New stainless steel lift supports for doors
- Patched fiberglass delaminations in bodywork
- Fresh coat of metallic paint
- New stronger rudders
