S/V Saguaro was finished from a bare hull by my father in an airplane hangar on a ranch in north central South Dakota. This sounds like the perfect opening to a disaster movie, but it really did turn out fine. Between his time in the US Army and running a large cattle operation for the majority of his life, he had an excellent method of researching and record keeping that will serve her new owner very well.
You will find schematics laying out every system in her, and find that some pieces are overbuilt in the best of ways. For example, her lifelines will, and have, support the weight of a grown man standing on them, and the stanchions have been pressed into duty as a tie off points when the situation requires it.
She can be sailed single-handed, and The owner sailed her for the first time from the Exhumas to Puerto Rico, and again from Trinidad back to Maryland. The owner would have been about 65 during that trip. The woodwork was all done by the owner, using timber felled from the family farm in Illinois. The refrigeration system gave no more headaches than any other out there and is ready to be put into service today. Some may wonder about the hours on the Westerbeke diesel, but you must understand that from when she was first put in the water in Red Wing, Minnesota and until the mast was stepped in Fort Pierce, Florida, that was her only means of propulsion, and it was rebuilt by a Westerbeke mechanic in Tupelo, Mississippi during that time.
There are understandable hesitations about purchasing a home -finished boat, but I really do think that once you really look at her, and maybe pay a visit, you will find that she will be more than capable of taking you anywhere you want to go, for as long as you want to be there.
