1986 Catalina 30 Cruiser Sailboat in Berkeley, California

Stock #167463

This Catalina 30 is a sailor's boat through and through and has a lot of upgrades to make it perform no matter what you ask of it. Read on to learn more.

It starts with the design of the Catalina 30. The high-aspect ratio of the keel provides greater righting motion. Additionally, high aspect ratio keels are easier to turn quickly as well as sail close hauled. And, this Catalina 30 has a lead keel with stainless steel bolts (see pictures), which both indicate the quality of this boat.

With a waterline length of 25', the Catalina's displacement of 10,200 lbs is slightly above average for modern cruiser-racers, which is positive because it gives the boat greater stability.

You combine the high aspect ratios with above average displacement and you get a sailboat that has the best of both worlds, speed and responsiveness, as well as stability in foul weather. This performance is what makes the Catalina 30 one of the most successful production sailing yachts in history with more than 6000 sold.

However, there is one key design flaw for the Catalina 30 that the current owner has fixed on this boat, making it unique among Catalina 30s. Specifically, the engine is vulnerable to being backflooded with sea water going up the exhaust due to a following wave or heeling too much. The owner completely redid the exhaust system including putting in a $600 custom exhaust pipe to prevent this. The owner also put in two bilge pumps to have redundancy for this important piece of equipment.

Beyond its performance and the upgrades the owner did to the systems, the cockpit is large and comfortable for a 30' sailboat and easily accommodates the helmsman at the wheel plus four companions.

Down below, the interior of the Catalina 30 is roomy, and quite well laid out, The forward cabin has large V-berths which form a large double when the included board and cushion connect the two sides.

The head is quite comfortable with a toilet, shower, sink and mirror. There is good storage space for clothes in a hanging locker and drawers opposite the head.

The main cabin is large and comfortable for a 30' boat. There is an L-shaped dining area to port, and a straight settee to starboard. This Catalina has two tables that can be used in the dining area, a small table for two people and a larger table for 5 that folds up against the forward bulkhead when not in use (see pictures of both).

In the galley, there is an icebox, refrigerator, stove, sink and microwave.

Dinghy included: Achilles inflatable with 5HP 4-stroke engine

Information On Condition

On the surface, the boat doesn't look as pretty as other boats. Beneath the surface, this boat is a gem with upgraded systems and upgraded engine components. Everything works on the boat and the bottom paint was just painted.

The starter and the alternator were replaced recently according to the owner and they look new in the pictures.

Hull bottom was painted in November 2018. The engine was serviced including new filters and an alternator belt in July 2018 and new batteries were...
