The owner and avid sailor of this Nantucket Island 38 has logged over 4,000 miles on her since purchasing in 2015. She hails from Honolulu and was built in the famous Ho Hsing yard which is the same yard that most Hans Christians were built. There were only five 38's ever built.
The current owner brought her over from Hawaii and praised her as being very solid and sea kindly while battling enormous seas and winds coming across the Pacific. She's said to have been as stable as one could dream. The owner has offered to deliver her to her new owner anywhere on the west coast!
The Nantucket Island 38 is a true blue water boat and this one has been steadily upgraded to create an even better rendition of her original self.
In 2011/12, the teak deck was removed, cloth laid down and painted with AWL grip and KIWI grip. Standing rigging was installed which cost $12000.
In 2013, new chain plates, a Harken Roller Furler MKII, a new depth sounder (Raymarine) and a new ammeter (Raymarine) were installed.
In 2014, a new stainless steel sink and faucet, new plumbing (potable water hoses), an Isotherm frig (12v &120v), and a Force 10 three-burner stove/oven was installed. A haul and paint were also done, bringing the hull down to the barrier coat then painted with three coats of Trinidad SR. A dripless shaft seal and cutlass bearing were also installed.
Over the last few years, a new Horizon GX1200 DCS/AIS VHF radio, HYDROVANE ($7500), LED nav lights, four 6v AGM batteries, Jasco Head. S/S Lewmar 48 self-tailing winches ($3000), running rigging (New England Rope, sta-set vintage)-($1700), SS lifelines, two 100 watt solar panels, steering cables, engine controls,a Raymarine A70 multifunction display chart plotter and Sony Bluetooth CD player were installed.
As you can tell, this boat has been not only cared for but revered. Her renovation is almost complete, though there are always projects on the horizon. See the condition section below for that short list.
This sloop is in great condition. The cabin is shiny and polished. The deck and cockpit are clean and in good repair. The dodger will need to be replaced, but it's helpful and less costly when you have the template to have another made.
The full battened mainsail and 110 jib are rated 6 of 10 per the owner, and estimated to be seven years old. The standing rigging is also estimated at seven years old. The running rigging, as noted above, was just replaced.
The hull needs to be buffed.
There is no headliner in the aft cabin.
These remaining projects will be completed by the current owner as time marches on unless she's purchased soon and the new owner wants to take these on.
