This 1982 Nor'Sea 27 has been lovingly owned by one couple since the boat was built by Heritage Marine in Southern California. The Nor'Sea 27 is an ideal boat for World cruising. It was based in Cape Coral for 4 years, and used often in the Caloosahatchee River, and northward in bays and the open Gulf. The shallow draft of 3.8 feet, coupled with the ballast, provide a comfortable, confident cruise to most waters and harbors along the gulf, even during low tides. Though not equipped, a mast lowering rig is available to allow passage under low bridges, permitting even wider operation of the boat.
Lyle Hess designed this remarkable vessel as a heavy weather, long distance cruiser which could be legally trailered. Construction was not to the minimum standard for avoiding liability but rather to a standard typical of much larger cruisers like the Tartan 50. Heritage Marine fabricated the hull as a single layup (rather than gluing two halves together), with laminations from 7 to 22 layers of fabric and mat for thicknesses between 5/16ths to 3/4ths of an inch, in lap strake for rigidity. With 3,100 pounds lead ballast, the boat is both rugged and extremely stable for its size. The ballast makes the boat self-righting for the worst case scenario.
Nor'Sea 27 cruisers have accumulated an impressive four circumnavigations and over 150 transoceanic crossings. The boat is outfitted for cruising with a 50 gallon fresh water tank, galley, privy, and with an upgraded Yanmar diesel engine with less than 500 engine hours and 27 gallon fuel tank. Five births (three forward in the cabin and two below the cockpit) also provide generous storage below decks.
Current Condition: The boat has been in storage on its trailer, north of Phoenix AZ since 2012 due to the owner's poor health. The exterior gelcoat is hazed from exposure to the elements, however no cracks in the finish are seen. The exterior wood of the handholds, tiller, and cabin and berthing closures have been weathered, and are in need of maintenance, though not replacement. Some of the seals (e.g. portholes) have leaked and compromised cosmetics of the interior woodwork in close proximity.
The engine is clean and was operable at last launch in Fall of 2011. Cleaning of the fuel tank is recommended and is facilitated by an access on the top of the tank. The shaft is straignt, though the current condition of the stuffing box is unknown. Prop is somewhat corroded, as is the anode. The mast and boom have several small areas of chaffing of the paint, all of which have been re-primed. Cables and stays are in good condition. Sails have been pilfered, and replacement Mainsail and Genoa have been priced at North Sails. The wet compass liquid is gone, but replaceable, and the glass is clear.
The trailer is sound, though with rust, and has mechanical braking. The boat has been transported from East to West Coasts several times, and was last used in 2011 moving the boat between lake and storage in AZ. The Wheels and tires (four for two axles, and a spare) were pilfered in storage.
Generous allowances have been made for missing items (Whhels/tires, sails), maintenance (engine, clean up, cosmetics), and upgrades (roller furling of headsail, electronics, and safety equipment).
Vessel has been on the hard for several years and shows signs of weathering. There is some water damage around the port holes, seems to have been minor and isolated to the port hole area.
Cabin shows well, hull needs a solid washing and wax.
Trailer needs to be completely serviced and wheels and ties will need to be purchased.
