The Cape Dory 36 is a proven Carl Alberg design with countless ocean miles logged, including circumnavigations, very well-engineered, and built with quality fittings.
This boat is built strong with a heavy rig in cutter configuration which emphasizes offshore work, though for coastal cruisers these boats are known for being nimble and easy to sail, with a shallow five-foot draft which makes for great bay hopping.
Construction is top-notch throughout and with excellent interior joiner work, the level of finish is exceptional. and the interior plan is straightforward and functional.
Stepping down below through the main cabin hatch you find yourself in the galley, with two large sinks and a three-burner, gimbaled stove/oven to port with the icebox in the aft section of counter.
The nav station and quarter berth are opposite the galley to starboard.
The saloon includes opposing straight settees, the port side sliding out to an expanded berth, with a very large double-leaf table amidships that is able to span the gulf between them
Continuing forward the head is to port with a hanging locker opposite. The V-berth cabin is spacious. There is storage in well-crafted drawers below the bunks, and the large overhead hatch and opening portlights help move the air around. Ventilation is excellent throughout the boat with plenty of opening bronze portlights.
The current owner, only the second, has owned and loved this boat for 34 years and kept her in very good condition, the interior rather amazing for the age, not a leak or stain to be found, and the exterior not too far behind. It's always tough to assess boats that are wrapped up on the hard, but the more time you spend on this one the more you are impressed.
The last season in the water was 2018, boat winterized and wrapped since, overall this boat is in very good, original condition for the age, despite some areas with gel coat mico-cracks or small chips here and there, percussion sounding revealed no indication of significant moisture or delamination, the exterior brightwork is of excellent finish and the interior wood and cabinetry is in phenomenal condition.
