There are small bass boats, and some bigger bass boats, usually freshwater bound, not much more than a surfboard with a giant engine, a couple bar stools and a cooler full of beer, racing about the river or lake to cover as many hot spots as possible before sundown. That's the common perception of what a "bass boat" is.
On the other hand, there are boats, regardless what you choose to call them, utilized to go after bigger bass in bigger waters. Whether you choose to call her a Downeaster or a cuddy, the Fortier 26 was designed to be a stable fishing platform that handles short choppy sea conditions well to meet the needs of hardcore fisherman along the shores from New Jersey through New England and, more recently on the Chesapeake Bay.
The Fortier 26 has a very fine bow and narrow entry forward which helps reduce pounding and improves maneuverability in short choppy seas. There is ample flare forward and a full-length, molded spray rail that runs along the chine from the stem to the transom to keep the boat and crew dry.
The boat's 10' beam is considerable for a 26' boat of this vintage and provides a very stable platform from which to fish.
A molded keel runs nearly the full length of the boat and adds to the boat's directional stability as well as provides excellent protection for the shaft, propeller, and rudder.
The rudder is supported on the bottom by a cast bronze shoe that extends from the keel.
Make no mistake about, it the Fortier 26 is designed to accommodate fishermen not overnight guests, offering minimal accommodations for two in a small cuddy cabin.
There is a single stainless steel sink on the port side, an ice box fitted into the counter top to starboard with storage beneath, and a marine toilet beneath the port side berth.
On the other hand, the cockpit is deep and measures nearly 9' wide by 16' long between the cabin bulkhead and the transom. Enough room for six to fish, four in comfort and three in luxury, and even one thanks to the cockpit engine controls and removable transom tiller.
Beneath the 3' by 4' engine box about centered in the boat is a solid, dependable 210 hp Volvo turbo-diesel and simple, direct drive train... the same kind of bullet proof, time-tested configuration relied upon by just about all commercial fishermen in this size and class of vessel.
Elegant in the truest sense of the word, a reliable machine that will accomplish the mission for which she was designed exquisitely well, and the proof lies in her mere existence in such excellent and willing condition after four decades...
Why, if she's half worn out she should last you another forty years!
