Why a Ketch? That "Grand Old Man of Pacific Yachting" Hugh Angelman (1886 - 1967), and his long time business partner, and Sea Witch/Sea Spirit co-designer, Charles Davies ( - 1998) designed and built some fantastic sailboats.
Both of these men left an indelible legacy in the sailing world. This Ketch is just one example of the great design and craftsmanship of the Angelman. Want more sail area yet smaller sails? This is your answer.
Some find the Ketch easier to handle single handed. If the conditions get too intense just drop the main and sail on the mizzen and genoa.
You'll hum along at a nice pace regardless. Mizzen is also great for keeping the boat in the best position to the wind/waves while motoring into the wind. Set tight it acts like a big rudder.
This Angelman model is called a Sea Spirit and is a few feet smaller than the well-known Sea Witch.
The owner (of twelve years) says this Sea Spirit should be valued for her beautiful lines, ease of sailing, and general manageability while underway.
The engine is a 2005. Owner estimates approx. 150 hours have been put on the engine since installed.
The cabin woodwork and upholstery appears to be in good condition, and the galley was only gently used. Some of the instrumentation needs to be re-installed: the compass, depth meter, knot meter.
The deck was replaced in 2014 and now has new plywood and non-skid paint. Portlights seem well sealed.
Railings and exposed wood (like the companionway door) needs a good sanding and coat of varnish.
Sails and rigging were all replaced in 2007 and are said by the owner to be in good shape with main and mizzen covered with sail covers.
There is a boat cover though it is in need to repair. It would be good to use as a pattern to sew a new whole-boat cover.
2018 update: Topsides found to have wood rot, requiring plank replacement. Scope is unknown. Stern also has compromised wood and would require replacement.
