Q. How did you learn about POP Yachts?
I was visiting a friend of a friend who was working, sitting out on his lanai with a laptop. I asked him what he was working on, and he told me that he lists boats. He invited me to come into the office and talk to the listings manager, and they hired me on the spot.
Q. So you started in listings, and then moved into sales?
I did really well in listings. I came out of the gate really strong and listed a lot of boats. About six months later, they asked me about moving to the Central Sales team.
Q. And how was that transition?
I always liked sales and I've always enjoyed working with people. I have a lot of patience, but in listings I learned to have even more patience. That was a big key when I moved into sales, too.
Q. How does the Central Sales team based in Sarasota differ from local sales in the different regions that POP Yachts covers?
In Central Sales, we get assigned the boats where we have no rep or have lost our local rep. It's not a perfect situation, but we still have a responsibility to that seller to market their boat and get it sold.
The people who are on the ground in the markets we represent, they get to go out and see the boat and meet and greet the buyers and sellers and develop that relationship. But in Central Sales, you don't get that opportunity.
Q. So what's your strategy to overcome that hurdle?
Being confident, doing research on the boat to get more understanding of its condition and contacting the buyer in a timely fashion. We do our best to represent the boat in the clearest way. It takes a little time to understand those limitations. And you have to be available. Anyone who knows me knows I eat, drink and sleep what I do. Boating is a seven-day activity, it's not a 9-to-5 thing. If you're accessible to clients, that adds to your success.
Q. How did you first get into boating?
Some of my best experiences were getting up at 5 in the morning with my dad and going to get bait and going fishing on the lake in Canandaigua, NY.
Q. What do you like to do when you're not working?
I love to travel, do anything outdoors - golfing, boating, sporting events, concerts. Working at home, once in a while I can sneak out and enjoy the sun.
Q. What's something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I spent 10 years in the Army National Guard as a second lieutenant, starting when I was 20. I don't think people know that about me.
Q. So what do you see for the future for yourself and for POP Yachts?
I can't see myself doing anything else right now. I really enjoy the company and the people. I think we can do anything at POP Yachts. We can put anything into this system and be successful marketing it. I think we're only going upward.
