Her PHRF rating of 168 says that she's about the same speed as the J/24 and about the same speed as such older racer-cruisers as the Pearson 30, Cal 34, Catalina 30 tall rig, or Irwin 30.A perfect combination of racing and cruising,
The boat is well constructed, with good detail work and hardware. The vast majority of boats have a lead ballasted daggerboard, while the company also offered the boat in a fixed keel version. All hardware is through bolted, with stainless backing plates on the lifeline stanchions but with only washers and nuts on all other hardware. There are also two substantial cockpit lockers for stowage.
"The boat was designed by Scott Graham and Eric Schlageter, principals of the Chicago-based G&S naval architecture firm.
The 7.9 was originally marketed as the Grand Slam, but later the name was dropped and it became the 7.9. It was built from 1982 through 1987, and again in 1990 through 1994. In total, 546 boats were built." -Sailing Magazine
