Sloop is a term for a specific type of Sailboat and it defines the type of "Rig" for the Sailboat. Sailboats require a Mast, Shrouds, a Forestay and in most cases a Backstay that support the Mast and provide stability to keep the Mast in place. The forestay is the attachment point for the most forward sail, know generically as a Head Sail. Head Sails come in a variety of styles and sizes for use in differing wind and weather conditions.
A Sloop will have only one Sail forward of the Mast, this is what defines a Sailboat as a Sloop rigged boat. The Sloop rig will have only one Mast.
