1972 Challenger 40 Sloop Sailboat in Moss Landing, California

Stock #198460

This 1972 Challenger 40 Sloop is USCG documented and sits in a transferable slip in Moss Landing. Challenger 40's have an excellent reputation of being a "bulletproof" bluewater cruising sailboat.

She makes a good liveaboard with a steady stream of large portlights along the starboard, port, and aft section of the cabin that generates lots of light down below to enjoy the views on the water.

The Perkins 4107 diesel engine has been well cared for, starts right up, and runs well.

Structurally she is very sound. The hull is a solid hand-laid fiberglass, very thick. The deck is strong, and there's been substantial work done to the mast over the years. The rigging is oversized, the mast rewired and the masthead rebuilt.

She is ready, minus a few small things, to take out and enjoy sailing. What she needs: A haul out and bottom paint (last done 6 years ago), and topside paint. The hull is dove every 6 months and the diver reports it to be in good condition with only very small and minimal blisters. The exterior brightwork needs attention. Some of the interior has been refinished but there's more to do, such as a new headliner put in. The headliner was removed to inspect the wood, which was found to be in great shape. The flooring is solid teak and holly and should be varnished.

Cushions inside are all in good condition.

More than 6' of headroom all over the cabin. Nearly a 13' beam creates some serious spaciousness.

Information On Condition

The current owner has owned the boat for 15 years and is selling because he bought another boat. He's taken care of the boat but some things need attention. Headliner needs to be replaced. Boat needs to be hauled and painted. Exterior brightwork needs attention.

The boat was hauled and painted 6 years ago, and the only issue was a through hull needing replacement. No blisters. A diver cleans the bottom every six months and checks zincs.

The engine has been well maintained and starts right up.

Two fresh water tanks are in use totaling 130 gallons. A third tank is in the bow but not in use as it isn't needed currently. That is 50 gallons.
