1968 Columbia C 50 Cutter Rig Sloop Sloop Sailboat in New Orleans, Louisiana

Stock #144172

Happy 50th birthday to this Columbia sloop! Buy a piece of sailing history right here - cruising or racing, you decide! One of 62 made between 1966-1970, this vessel is a sloop designed like a cutter, combining the high performance from both designs!

She has a master stateroom that's forward and two heads, one full head with vanity storage, and a custom factory shower door with seahorse scene, and a half head for when the full is occupied. The port head has a macerator auto-flush toilet.

The mast has been freshly painted; It has the track available for the spinnaker (but not installed at this time). Owner states that it is a "Dream to drive, very balance, points like a J35!"

He also stated that if he were to keep it, he would have gotten an asymmetrical chute for it, and that the Yanmar engine runs strong.

She has two settee berths, bringing her sleeping accommodations up to a seven-person capacity.

There is a large saloon area, including a nice dinette, and a full galley to accommodate you on those long journeys. The brand new stove is gimballed for use on the open water. Radio plays nicely, to the speakers all throughout the boat - 4 in the cabin and 2 in the cockpit. Demonstrated at the time of photos.

The navigation panel is in a convenient location, and has all of the information, switches, radio, and GPS at your fingertips!

The nice 75hp diesel engine gives you that extra push when needed (new in 2005 with low hours since).

The fuel tank and battery have easy-to-use access panels.

This vessel has plenty of storage - take a look at the pics. Under the saloon floor is nice storage, the forward anchor locker is huge. The galley cupboards can hold all of your additional needs as well.

The owner said this boat is "Quick sailing, rates of 117 phrf. It easily sails to its rating. It's an award-winning, race-winning boat."

The C50 is the same model owned by the world-famous Brazilian racer, Grael Torben, who used his personal C50 to carry the Olympic torch during the Olympics in Brazil!

There is a C50 owner's website available, as well as access to all of the plans, prints, and owner's manuals for sale online.

Be the next owner of this custom-built award-winning sloop/racer; she is ready for the open seas!

Information On Condition

This vessel is 50 years old this year but is in excellent condition for her age. All of the bulkheads are extra tabbed, reinforced for ocean racing.

Comes with the cable stay to add the storm jib between the mast and the stay - comes with storm jib.

Sail area is 977 sq ft. The rigging all comes down the left-hand side - you can run this solo, but you do have to leave the helm to adjust the main at the mast. The keel shape makes this boat highly maneuverable.

The rear radar post is there, but currently only holds the GPS pods; a radar could be installed.

Known issues per current owner:

The Raymarine autopilot is there but not working; Fluxgate compass has an issue.

A/C is 'fiddly' and trips the breaker.

Apollo Generator 6600 motor runs but is not producing electricity.

Refrigerator/freezer - one temperature control unit needs to be removed and replaced.

These all need servicing. The owner has a folder full of maintenance records to be transferred to the new owner.

As to the hull:

Owner purchased the vessel six months prior to Hurricane Katrina when she was beached; all hull damage occurred to the starboard side of the hull and water came on.

Owner can provide the name of maintenance technicians, the second generation family doing the repairs to the vessel locally, and did all of the fiberglass repairs.

Owner states that the repairs were made 10 feet either direction from the damaged area, but has no photos of the repair process.

In regard to the sails, the Seller stated that the:

2 Main Sails are in great condition

The Head Sail needs cleaning but is otherwise in good shape
These are unknown age, as they came with the boat when he bought it after Katrina.

He has The original 1968 gennaker, and possibly the original storm jib (unusable, may have trashed it).

He has a brand new asymmetrical spinnaker, never installed. Off the shelf new from North Sail, and Seller says it is poorly cut - cheap purchase.

They launch from the anchor roller.

All of the cushions came with the boat at current owner's time of purchase. They're in good shape, all he has added is new velcro on the rear

The bottom is to be newly scrubbed within the next two weeks - regularly scheduled maintenance.
