1919 Navy Lighter 50 Motor Launch Trawler in Wilmington, California

Stock #101117

Although located in Canada, due to Canadian regulations, this boat is not available for sale to potential buyers in Canada.

In 1919 The U.S. Navy commissioned this vessel to be built for troop transport. Per the plaque located above the port hatch, she could carry up to 190 troops.

Overtime, she made it to Wilmington where she's been slipped in the same berth since 1964. She was owned by the Famed Violin player Harry Hyams. Mr. Hyams enjoyed her up until the last week before he passed at the age of 97, in January 2015.

The current owner purchased her in July of 2015 and started some projects to restore her to the feel of a classic 1930's motor yacht. You'll see construction materials in the photos.

This beautiful old gal is a very nice boat that can sleep 10 if you wish, or she'll make a fantastic liveaboard for a family. The Master Stateroom has a double berth with settee that doubles as a pilot berth. the forward head has a stand-alone sink, full hanging closet, toilet and full stand up shower. A very comfortable space.

The aft cabin features two twin sized beds that can sleep two in a pinch, A second head is just forward of the aft cabin, and across the companionway another small cabin has been converted to a walk in closet.

When she was commissioned, she was a steam ship, and she still retains her old steam pipe as a nice decorative piece of architecture. It also serves as the holding post for the parlor's fold up table. Just imagine the history that old table has seen with all the boat's famous visitors. Friends of Mr. Hyams sitting around playing cards.

The bridge actually makes a very comfortable living space with the leather settee, and other chairs offering respite. The leather settee converts to a pair of bunks to sleep another 2 people.

At the helm, you'll find bones ready to ply the seas again. You'll notice the original switches for the boat, as they still function very well. Besides the Fish finder, radar, VHF and CB radio you'll find at the helm, she also has an autopilot. The Autopilot might not function, but again, what a wonderful piece of history.

The galley down is a great place to prepare and enjoy meals with the stove/oven, stainless steel sink and full size fridge; you have all the comforts of home.

Below decks you'll find the Detroit Diesel 6-71 powerplant that runs wells, and the Universal Diesel Generator that was installed in 2009. The generator has its own 130 gallon fuel tank, so you're not pulling from the main fuel supply.

The rear deck offers tons of outdoor living space, as doors the upper deck or roof. The entire upper deck is designed to break away from the boat and become a raft in case of sinking. She's made of foam and fiberglass for buoyancy.

This ole girl has a lot of life left in her and is ready for new adventures, or someone to live aboard in comfort.

Information On Condition

Recently her stringers were found to have moisture in them, and may need some repair. A full survey will give an accurate picture of work needed.

Per the seller, in 2008, there was about $40,000 worth of work done on her hull, including some refastening and new planking. The engine was refreshed about 200 hours ago with new injectors, water pump, starter and a few other items. She started and ran well when I visited the boat.

The current owner does not know what she's coated with. It seems to be a plaster of some sort.

She has a wood keel with piece of copper running from the bow, back under the boat, so she can break ice if need be. The bottom is reported to be in good condition by the diver, but she may need bottom paint fairly soon.
